Partly due to the arrival of foreign franchises, competition in
the retail industry in the Netherlands has increased significantly.
Consequently, many parties are aiming for an increase in market
power and dominance in the distribution chain. Their investments
are often aimed at achieving economies of scale and increasing the
purchasing power by means of mergers, further concentration and
cooperation.
The quest for economies of scale can also create a demand for
larger outlets. Such spaces are not always available in inner
cities or existing shopping centers, and the costs can be
prohibitive when they are. In addition to the high rent,
accessibility and/or stocking problems make things very difficult
for retailers. Chains and retail formulas are therefore
increasingly opting for a site outside the traditional shopping
center.
